Olives go Vintage

This week, my olive-loving family and I tried some new olives from Waitrose and I thought I’d share the experience with you. I only started eating these strange little things a few years ago, and it has to be said, I only like the giant green ones or the purple, sweet ones. Basically, I just like sweet olives… Picky? Yes, but not if you count my olive-avoiding techniques of years-gone-by. Whereas the rest of the fam LOVES them, all of them and can’t get enough. So when I spied these, I thought… they look right up our street.

They are “Vintage” and being from a family of designery-arty-types, I thought oooooo how cultural, we shall love these as much as we love a good vintage wine, or a vintage car. Well… it’s safe to say… they did, but me, not so much. I’m more of a sweeter than sweet, Disney loving, sugar-coated kind of person, but the rest of the clan, they’re a little more up for the stranger stuff… they like such things as a well made brogue or hard-edge minimalism and they love vintage fairs. Maybe I should have seem my dislike of these olives in the fact that vintage fairs stress me out? Or perhaps the dark green colour of them should have forewarned me, but no, I pressed on…

Well, if you like most olives, you will probably love these. They have a “meaty” taste, to me they taste like a ‘proper’ olive. If you wanted to use these for baking or cooking, you’d have to de-stone them

first (effort!!) but served up in a lovely bowl, with a glass of champagne (or perhaps a martini if you’re names Bond, James Bond) or maybe just a beer and some crisps, these would be ideal! So, overall, a yes to these for dinner party wonderfulness, but a no, if like me, you prefer the sweeter, juicier things in life!
