I got sent a lovely box of DS (Dietary Specials) treats and was very excited to find products I hadn’t tried before… Brioche, Breadsticks and Pizza bases! All gluten free and all yummy! There was also a packet of biscuits and some brown bread ciabatta rolls, also gluten free! I’ve tried these two, but it’s been a while, so what better time than now to try everything again. The DS Gluten Free pizza bases were the first to be munched up… what a fab store cupboard thing to have in! I’m used to making my own dough and sauces and toppings, so it was a very welcome, time-saving treat to have bases that just needed the fillings assembled onto them. The bases cooked really well and were nice and crisp on the outside and baked on the inside, so yummy! I made a sauce from chopped tomatoes and 2 tbsps of pesto, spread this on the base then added spray-oil fried onions and red peppers, chorizo and sun-dried tomatoes a couple of shakes of chilli powder. To top it off, I sprinkled on a handful of grated Cheddar and some chunks of Port Salut cheese. I then baked it in the oven for 15 minutes and the meal was ready!
I served the pizza up with salad, coleslaw and all the usual pizza-based trimmings, and, we had some of the DS Gluten Free Breadsticks for dipping in my homemade Chilli Jam (Recipe for the jam can be found here). These went down really well, dad really liked how crisp they were and I loved them so much that I’ve had to make some homemade hummus to go with them! You know something is good when another thing has to be made from scratch, just to go with it!
At lunch, mum and I have tried the DS Gluten Free Brown Bread Ciabatta Rolls… these were as delicious as I remembered, and, they are good for you too! I had two rolls warmed through then toasted with gluten free Worcester Sauce, grated Cheddar cheese and sliced plum tomatoes – so perfect for this chilly weather! Mum had Lentil Soup and a roll and really enjoyed the texture. She can eat gluten, but said she preferred these rolls as they were a lot lighter than usual and didn’t feel stodgy! Overall we both loved them!
My breakfast this week has been really lovely and varied – something I find so important with my intolerances and IBS. So, I was really happy to find the DS Gluten Free Brioche in the box… I love them so much, I am a complete convert. I had been eating a lot of cereal for breakfast, but when it’s cold, I really crave something warm in the morning, and as creating porridge can be a bit of an effort when I’m so tired I can’t function and the caffeine has not yet hit me, I am now forever in debt to these Brioche rolls! Having never been a fan of Brioche before the banning of all wheat and gluten from my life (yes, I love a bit of drama in the morning), I am now a total convert! You have to try these! I had mine with gooseberry jam yesterday and raspberry jam today – my mum makes the most amazing jams, so I have an endless supply of things to put on my rolls for breakfast… now I need to go and stock back up!
Let me know what DS Gluten Free products you enjoy, and, if there are any you really think I should try!
