Rubelle’s Moon’s Cake Days

Guess what I got for Christmas?

The Hummingbird Bakery’s Cake Days book.

But… guess which book doesn’t cover gluten free cooking?

The Hummingbird Bakery’s Cake Days book.

I always wanted to be a good cake baker, so this is my own challenge for my 2012 part of Rubelle’s Moon‘s Gluten Free Challenge. I’m excited, a little nervous and mostly, hoping this will be a really good focus for me for this year… of course there will be other challenges along the way, but this is my big one!

I’m sure a lot of you have this book, have seen the book, and if you love pink as much as I do, have been tempted to buy the book. But… if like me, you’ve always held off because of the lack of gluten free advice, then think again, go buy the book, and cook along with me! I’m aiming to make my way through the book and provide you with some gluten free variations for cooking. I know that they sell gluten free versions of their cakes at the Hummingbird Bakery (go have a Red Velvet Cake – picture on the left – and come back and tell me what you think), but I’m hoping that through me blogging about my baking, it will encourage a lot more bakers out there to get involved with the wonderful, creative and altogether deliciousness of the Hummingbird Bakery eats and treats!

My hope is that along the way you can all help me out with what I’m baking that week, as, I’m guessing some of you have already had a go at quite a lot of the recipes, so any advice or tips, please do throw them my way! But, for now, i’ll be working my way through the book and not only improving on my gluten free baking, but also working on my decorating skills… something I’ve always wanted to be good at (like a kid at school wanting to be amazing at painting, I tend to attack the icing with too much water or the wrong colouring and when it doesn’t go right, I just pour it on the cake in a haphazard way!!) So, armed with some lovely new baking goodies (thanks mum, dad and the boyfriend) and a copy of Cake Days (thanks to the boyfriend), I’m hoping to become somewhere half decent at making cakes, bakes and all manner of sweet treats! Hopefully my cakes will eventually turn out as well as the pictures!

Feel free to comment on what I’ll be up to, or email me at rubellesmoon@gmail.com if you have any suggestions for equipment, ingredients or ways of baking that you think will be important on this journey of baking improvement and learning!

I’ll point out now that of course, the recipes in the book are wonderful and they are all the work of The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook, Recipe text ©Tarek Malouf & The Hummingbird Bakers, Photography Peter Cassidy © Ryland Peters & Small. My recipes are simply adaptations, but ultimately, in this challenge, all credit to the authors, producers, publishers! So, I recommend – buy the book and use my blog to fit it into your gluten free diet! Wonderful!
